These two islands, somehow standing in the shadow of their famous brother Skiathos, are renowned for their breathtaking natural beauty, charming villages, and warm hospitality, making them ideal destinations for anyone seeking a tranquil escape.
None of them has an airport, the closest international one being in Skiathos, so the only way you can arrive is by ferry from Skiathos, Volos or Thessaloniki. These islands are still not affected by mass tourism and the main reason is that they do not have so many beaches and most of them are pebbled. However, they are preferred by those who just want to escape the noise of popular destinations, snorkeling enthusiasts or those that prefer nature and hiking.
Skopelos or Mamma Mia! island
Although Skiathos has been marketed heavily after the success of Mamma Mia! movie, actually almost all the scenes have been filmed in Skopelos. However, you will not see any poster or sign referring to the movie. There is only a sun perched sign at Kastani beach, but other than that nothing. Life here is exactly the siga-siga way and by the end of your stay you will start doing what the Greeks do – enjoy the simple things in life
I highly recommend to rent a car or a scooter to explore the island, as public transportation is limited and only covers the south side of the island, connecting Skopelos Town to Glossa and passing through the famous beaches and Skopelos town to Stafilia and Agnontas.
Things you can do in Skopelos:
- Go to the famous beaches featured in Mamma Mia! – Kastani, Panormos and Milia
- Climb to Agios Ioannis Chapel – the wedding scene
- Take a stroll through Skopelos Old Town – here there are no cars, no shops or tavernas just narrow alleys and stairs. When we got there we used to joke that all supermarkets are near the port and imagine getting back home after climbing all that hill just to realize that you forgot to buy cigarettes or parsley

4. Visit the church from old town. On the outer wall you will see a small round hole with some coins inside. This dates back to decades ago, when wealthy people would leave money here for the poor. Those in need took only the amount they needed and left the rest for the others.

5. Don’t miss the medieval Venetian Castle and the Folklore Museum for a glimpse into the island’s history and traditions.
On Skopelos, try the famous Skopelitiki cheese pie, a flaky pastry filled with local cheese. Fresh seafood is abundant, especially grilled octopus and sardines.
Alonissos
Not so touristy and mostly overlooked, Alonissos has its hidden gems that will make your visit here totally worth it.
Your first encounter with the island will be the port of Patitiri. Here you will find tavernas and shop surrounding the port, where you can enjoy a coffee or some delicious local food. Like in Skopelos, renting a car or a scooter is highly recommended, as public transport is even more limited. Local buses run only between Patitiri and Chora (Old Town) and between Patitiri and Steni Vala. Check their official website for latest updates and schedule.
But the true gem is the Old Town, located on top of the hill. You can take the public bus, walk for about 1h (approx 3km, keep in mind the elevation) or drive there. Leave the car or the scooter outside the city and then get lost on the narrow streets

Go to central square for the Monument of National Resistance, the Byzantine Fortress

and some breathtaking views over the Aegean Sea

The National Marine Park of Alonissos is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering opportunities to spot rare Mediterranean monk seals and vibrant marine life.
In Alonissos, savor dishes like lobster pasta and “fouskakia,” delicious fried dough balls drizzled with honey.
This island features idyllic shores like Agios Dimitrios Beach, known for its pebbles and clear water, and Leftos Gialos Beach, where you’ll find beach bars and a laid-back vibe. For those seeking tranquility, Megalos Mourtias offers calm waters and stunning scenery.
Whether you’re wandering through charming villages, tasting local flavors, or relaxing on pristine beaches, Skopelos and Alonissos promise unforgettable memories in the heart of the Aegean.
