Athens is a city where time folds elegantly upon itself—where the marble columns of antiquity cast their shadows over bustling modern avenues, and each street corner whispers tales from a glorious past. As the cradle of Western civilization, Athens invites travelers to immerse themselves in a tapestry woven from myth, history, art, and the everyday joys of Greek life. Whether you’re a history buff, a culinary explorer, or a seeker of lively city vibes, Athens offers a wealth of experiences that linger long after you leave.

Unveiling the Past: The Must-See Ancient Sites

IMPORTANT: during the summer months when there is heatwave warning in effect the sites, especially the Acropolis, can be closed completely or open only in the morning or after 4 pm. They are also extremely crowded and I strongly recommend to buy tickets in advance from the official website and be very careful of the time slot! Wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. High heels are strictly forbidden in all archaeological sites in Greece! Have enough water for your visit, there are no shops inside the sites.

  • The Acropolis and the Parthenon
    • No visit to Athens is complete without standing atop the Acropolis, the ancient citadel perched above the city. The Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, rises in luminous white marble, its Doric columns speaking of the city’s power and devotion. Wander among the Propylaea, the Erechtheion with its iconic Caryatid columns, and the small but elegant Temple of Athena Nike. From this vantage point, take in stunning panoramic views of Athens sprawling to the sea.
  • The Ancient Agora
    • Once the heart of civic life, the Agora was where philosophers like Socrates once strolled and debated. Today, visitors can walk the same paths, marvel at the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus, and explore the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos, now home to a fascinating museum filled with ancient artifacts.
  • The Temple of Olympian Zeus
    • A testament to ambitious ancient engineering, the Temple of Olympian Zeus was one of the largest temples ever built in the ancient world. Though only a fraction of its original columns remain, their sheer scale inspires awe. Don’t miss Hadrian’s Arch, a nearby Roman gateway, which frames views of both ancient and modern Athens.
  • The Roman Agora and Tower of the Winds
    • Located just east of the ancient Agora, this Roman marketplace is a quieter but equally intriguing site. The Tower of the Winds, an ancient timepiece and weather station, still stands as a marvel of Hellenistic ingenuity.
  • Philopappou Hill
    • Very close to the second entrance/exit from the Acropolis you can find Philoppapou hill or the Nymphs’ Hill. See the church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris, Socrates’ prison, the Sanctuary of Pan, Dioridis’ telescope (one of the first observatories in Athens) and take amazing pictures of the Acropolis from here.

Exploring Modern Athens: Neighborhoods and Culture

  • Plaka
    • Nestled at the foot of the Acropolis, Plaka is the old historical neighborhood of Athens, with winding lanes, neoclassical mansions, and vibrant bougainvillea. Stroll its cobbled streets, browse artisanal shops, and linger in quaint tavernas serving traditional Greek fare under the shade of grapevines.
  • Monastiraki
    • Famous for its lively flea market, Monastiraki is a melting pot of cultures and eras. Hunt for unique treasures, from vintage books to handmade jewelry, and sample street food like souvlaki and loukoumades (Greek doughnuts). Don’t forget to stop by the impressive Tzistarakis Mosque and the ancient Hadrian’s Library.
  • Psiri
    • Once gritty, now hip, Psiri is Athens’ answer to the creative renaissance. Its streets are adorned with colorful murals and home to a buzzing nightlife, trendy bars, and innovative eateries. Catch a live rebetiko performance (Greek blues) or simply soak up the bohemian atmosphere.
  • Kolonaki
    • For a taste of upscale Athens, wander the elegant streets of Kolonaki. This chic district boasts designer boutiques, art galleries, stylish cafés, and the Benaki Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Greek art and historical objects.

Art, Museums, and Modern Marvels

  • The Acropolis Museum
    • A masterpiece of modern architecture, the Acropolis Museum lies in the shadow of its ancient counterpart. Its glass floors and soaring galleries display treasures from the Acropolis, including the original Caryatids and sculptural fragments rescued from centuries of history.
  • The National Archaeological Museum
    • Home to the world’s richest collection of Greek antiquities, this museum takes visitors on a journey through millennia—from exquisite Cycladic figurines to the golden funerary mask of Agamemnon and astonishing Hellenistic masterpieces.
  • The Museum of Cycladic Art
    • Delve into the mysterious beauty of early Aegean civilization with a visit to this museum, which features elegant marble figurines and everyday objects from the Cycladic islands.
  • Contemporary Galleries and Street Art
    • Athens pulses with creativity. Explore cutting-edge galleries like the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), and keep an eye out for street art; the city’s walls have become one of Europe’s hottest open-air galleries.
  • Enjoy a concert at a bouzoukia or at the Herod Atticus Odeon near the Acropolis. This ancient theatre is home to many shows due to its incredible acoustic, especially during Athens Festival

Culinary Adventures: Savoring Athens

The flavors of Athens tell a story all their own. Greek cuisine is a celebration of the Mediterranean—olive oil, ripe tomatoes, tangy feta, grilled meats, and aromatic herbs. Start your day with a flaky spanakopita (spinach pie) and a strong Greek coffee in a local kafeneio. Enjoy a leisurely lunch of moussaka or fresh seafood at a seaside taverna in Mikrolimano or Piraeus, Athens’ ancient port.

For a truly local experience, dive into a meze feast: small plates of grilled octopus, dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), smoky eggplant salad, and tzatziki. Pair your meal with a glass of ouzo or a carafe of local wine, and don’t miss the chance to try baklava or loukoumades for dessert.

Beyond the Landmarks: Unique Experiences in Athens

  • Lycabettus Hill
    • Climb or take the funicular up Lycabettus Hill for breathtaking views over Athens and the Aegean Sea. At sunset, the city glows gold, and the illuminated Parthenon floats above the urban landscape like a dream.
  • National Garden
    • Step into this shady oasis in the heart of Athens—a lush retreat with winding pathways, duck ponds, and rare plants. Perfect for a relaxing stroll, a picnic, or a moment of calm amidst the city’s energy.
  • Changing of the Guard at Syntagma Square
    • Witness the traditional changing of the Evzones guard outside the Hellenic Parliament. Their unique uniforms and high-stepping march are a symbol of Greek pride and history. PLEASE keep silence during the process. If you bring your kids, it might be boring for them.
  • Do not miss Little Cook, a hidden gem right in the center of Athens. It is decorated depending on the season or holiday and you will feel like you step in right in the middle of a fairytale: Winter Wonderland (like me), Halloween, Alice in Kookland, Mary Poppins, Snow White, Peter Pan, Pirates and circus. Don’t trust me? Have a look here
  • Panathenaic Stadium – host of the first modern Olympic Games this stadium is made entirely out of marble.
  • Attica Zoological Park and the Designer Outlet
    • Located in Spata, close to Athens Airport and walking distance from one another, the Attica Zoological Park will be a delight for the small ones. The animals live in very good conditions and you have the chance to see a huge variety of amazing creatures, from colorful parrots and macaws, elephants, tigers, lions, Arabian onyx, tortoises, Komodo dragon, monkeys and even pet the lemurs. Shopping addicts can enjoy their time in the designer outlet, home of many brands, from sports to luxury clothes and enjoy a lunch or dinner at the restaurants.
  • Enjoy a day at the beach in Glyfada
    • Athens as a city doesn’t have a beach and the nearest one is in Glyfada or the Saint Tropez of Athens. Bustling with hotels and restaurants/tavernas along the shores, enjoy some sun and sea at Glyfada beach or simply walk along the promenade and see the marina filled with boats and yachts, enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants directly on the beach or just watch the locals and tourists.
  • Day Trips from Athens
    • Athens is an excellent base for exploring further afield. Take a short drive to Cape Sounion to see the Temple of Poseidon perched dramatically above the sea, or embark on a cruise to the nearby islands of Aegina, Hydra, or Poros for a taste of Greek island life. If you are a history buff, you can also take a day trip to Delphi and wonder around the ruins of what used to be the important sanctuary of Pythia, Apollo’s most famous oracle. You can also take a short drive to Nafplio, Greece’s first capital (before Athens) and see the Corinth Canal, a masterpiece of human engineering. You can be lucky enough to see a ship crossing the narrow canal (for sailors of cruise ships crossing the Corinth Canal is the same as it is for pilots to land at Madeira Airport)
